Debunking Myths Around Slow Living

When you hear the term “slow living,” what comes to mind?

Is it spending your days curled up with a book in a cozy cottage? Living off the grid, away from the demands of modern life? Or maybe just sitting around, doing absolutely nothing?

Let’s be real for quick moment - when I first heard about slow living, I immediately pictured someone in a countryside cottage, sipping tea all day, completely detached from the chaos of the world. And honestly? It sounded dreamy but totally unrealistic for someone like me.

If you’re nodding along, you’re not alone. Many of us think slow living is only for people with endless free time or a perfectly curated life. You might even be thinking, “That sounds great, but I’ve got work, kids, and a never-ending to-do list—there’s no way slow living can fit into my world”.

But here’s the thing: slow living isn’t about escaping the chaos, doing nothing, or having hours of free time. It’s about reclaiming your time and energy, focusing on what truly matters, and creating a life that feels more intentional - even if you’re busy. Especially if you’re busy.

Let’s debunk some common myths about slow living and explore how it can fit into any lifestyle. Trust me, you don’t need to move to the countryside or quit your job to make this happen. In fact even if you’re the busiest person on planet earth, it is possible, and probably just what you need.

What Slow Living Really Is

Slow living isn’t about being lazy, withdrawing from responsibilities, or living in a picture perfect home. It’s about making small, conscious choices that align with your values and allow you to live with more intention. It’s a shift in mindset, a way to approach your life with mindfulness and purpose.

Instead of rushing through your days, slow living invites you to focus on the small moments that truly matter. It’s not about abandoning productivity, but about redefining it, choosing quality over quantity and prioritising what brings you joy and fulfilment.

Picture this: enjoying your morning coffee without checking emails or scrolling through everyone else’s highlight reel on Instagram, just enjoying the quiet moments instead of rushing to the next thing. Or taking a short walk outside, fully present and free from distractions. These aren’t grand, life-altering changes, they’re simple, intentional shifts that create more space for peace and joy. They might already be something that is part of your life, and if they are you might be thinking “oh actually slow living isn’t that complicated after all”. And you would be right.

Slow Living is for Everyone - Yes, Even You

One of the biggest misconceptions about slow living is that it’s only for people with time to spare. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. If anything, slow living is most important for those of us who feel stretched too thin.

You don’t need hours of free time to slow down. In fact, slow living is about finding those small, manageable moments in your day to breathe, reset, and reconnect with yourself. Whether it’s pausing to take a deep breath before diving into your next task or turning off notifications for an hour to be fully present with your family, these tiny shifts can make a big difference.

It’s Not About the Perfect Aesthetic

Let’s address another myth: slow living isn’t about perfectly arranged shelves, minimalist homes, or living off the land. Instagram and the like have made us think that we need the aesthetics to live slowly, when that couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s about creating a lifestyle that works for you.

Maybe you live in a busy city or a small flat, like I do. That doesn’t mean you can’t embrace slow living. For me, it’s as simple as tending to my balcony garden, preparing meals with care, or taking moments of stillness throughout the day. You don’t need a cosy cottage, loads of space or endless time to make slow living a reality. It’s about finding ways to bring intention and mindfulness into the life you’re already living. Remember: we’re not looking to add more to our lives, that would be counterproductive.

The True Beauty of Slow Living

At its core, slow living is about presence. It’s about showing up in your life with purpose and aligning your daily actions with what truly matters to you. It’s not about doing less - it’s about doing the right things with more intention.

The best part? Slow living is completely customisable to you, in fact, it will look different to each and every one of us. Whether you’re juggling a demanding job, raising kids, or navigating a packed schedule (or all of these things, right?), you can adapt its principles to fit your unique circumstances.

So, where do you start? Begin small. Maybe it’s carving out 5 minutes in the morning to step outside or too journal, setting boundaries with your time, or finding a moment of calm before the day begins. These little changes add up, creating a ripple effect that leads to a more balanced and fulfilling life.
