The modern disconnection from the seasons (and how to find your way back)

Disconnected from the cycles of nature, we’ve forgotten how to truly live with the seasons. Here’s why it matters — and how to find your way back.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel disconnected from the natural rhythms that have guided humanity for centuries. With artificial lighting, technology, and a never-ending stream of tasks, we’ve lost touch with the cycles of nature, the changing seasons, the ebb and flow of life that comes with each shift in the weather.

But this disconnection comes at a cost. Living in tune with the seasons isn’t just about wearing cosy jumpers in the autumn or enjoying the long days of summer. It’s about syncing our energy, routines, and mindset with nature’s rhythms. When we’re in alignment with the seasons, we feel more grounded, more connected, and more at peace. We become more aware of what our bodies and minds need in each season, and we can move through life with more intention and ease.

Why does it matter?

The shift from agrarian lifestyles, where people worked the land in rhythm with the seasons, to modern urban living has created a gap. We’re no longer planting seeds in the spring or harvesting in the fall. Many of us live in climates where the changing seasons feel distant, with artificial schedules and routines dominating our lives. But the impact of this disconnection goes deeper than the loss of tradition; it affects our mental health, our productivity, and our sense of belonging in the world.

When we disregard the seasons, we’re also ignoring our bodies' natural needs. We may push ourselves too hard during the winter months when our bodies crave rest, or expect ourselves to stay productive when nature is telling us to slow down. By ignoring these signs, we risk burnout and stress, and lose our sense of balance.

How to Find Your Way Back

  1. Pay Attention to the Natural Light: One of the simplest ways to reconnect with the seasons is to tune into the natural light around you. In the winter months, embrace the cosiness of shorter days by slowing down, resting, and reflecting. During the summer, take advantage of longer daylight hours to be more active and connect with nature.

  2. Practice Seasonal Eating: Embrace the bounty of each season by eating more foods that are in season where you live. Not only does this help you reconnect with nature’s cycles, but seasonal eating also supports local farmers and reduces your environmental footprint.

  3. Align Your Routines with the Seasons: Adapt your daily routines to the natural shifts in energy. During the colder months, allow yourself more time for rest and introspection. In spring, focus on renewal and growth, both in your personal life and your environment. Summer is a time for activity and connection, while fall invites reflection and gratitude.

  4. Create Seasonal Traditions: Reconnect with the changing seasons through simple traditions, whether it’s harvesting in your garden, lighting candles for the winter solstice, or celebrating the first blooms of spring. These rituals can serve as gentle reminders of the cycles we are a part of.

  5. Spend Time Outdoors: Even in the hustle of everyday life, make time to step outside. Whether it's a walk in the park, a hike in the woods, or simply sitting on your porch, spending time in nature reminds us of our place in the world and helps us align with its rhythms.

The beauty of the seasons is that they are always with us, whether we choose to notice them or not. By reawakening to the cycles of nature, we can live more intentionally, with a deeper sense of connection to ourselves, the world around us, and the natural forces that shape our lives. It’s time to slow down, take notice, and find our way back to the seasons.
